Music is everywhere, and for some people, music is everything. But, what is music? According to Merriam-Webster, music is defined as "the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity." You can even hear music in nature from a babbling brook to a morning songbird. Although how humans began making music is unclear, there is evidence in prehistoric cave paintings of people dancing. This strongly suggests that they had some primitive form of music. It is safe to speculate that they used rudimentary prototypes to modern day wind instruments using hollow sticks. Music has been a soothing and immersive art form that has helped bring people together and even improve their physical well-being.

Musicians, especially, reap added benefits than someone who passively listens to music. According to a study published in Evolutionary Psychology, performing music releases endorphins, which are our body's natural opiates. A rush of endorphins can help alleviate stress and even increase pain tolerance. If you've ever been to a live musical performance, you can attest to its hypnotizing and infectious nature; it elevates your mood, relieves anxiety, and puts you in a sort of meditative state. Whether you play Norwegian-inspired black metal, contemporary gospel, or avant-garde jazz, music is a means to express yourself and bathe in its warm and comforting ether. That's reason enough to spend all of your free time working out the chorus of a song or writing inspired lyrics.
