So what is a San Diego Music Thing you ask? It's an annual three-day music and media conference currently in its 8th installment. During the day, attend a conference to brush up on the legal or marketing side of the music business with nationally-known panelists. At night, check out over 150 local, regional, and national bands perform at San Diego's best music venues. What's not to love?

Rockin' for a Cause

The San Diego Music Thing isn't just an awesome festival/conference, but also a community outreach program. Produced by the San Diego Music Foundation, the San Diego Music Thing will donate proceeds to fund experiential music programs in 75 schools around San Diego County. The Music Foundation provides students from K-12 with musical instruments in partnership with quality instrument brands.

Top Band Picks

From Thursday to Saturday enjoy the best local and nationally-recognized bands at popular venues like The Casbah, The Irenic, and The Observatory. There are so many show conflicts which is a good thing because there are no fluff bands. I will definitely try to catch Viet Cong, Yo La Tengo, The Briefs, Born Ruffians, Matthew Logan Vazquez (Delta Spirit), JJUUJJUU, No Age, and Paper Days. Of course, all the bands are great but there's only one of me. Stay tuned for a SDMT review coming soon.

School of Rock

Join a distinguished array of speakers on Thursday and Friday at the Lafayette Hotel in San Diego where they'll cover all the important parts of navigating the dark waters of the music business. On Thursday check out conferences that touch on everything from the legal aspect of getting your music out there to strategies to effectively communicate with your fans on social media and finally how to build your brand as a musician. On Friday, learn how to get your music licensed, how to survive on the road and more. Because there is no God, I won't be able to attend most of the conferences but you should!

And there you have it, San Diego Music Thing combines knowledge with great live music. What's better than that? Nothing. You heard it here first. If you're an aspiring musician or even a well-established one, there's something new to learn and experience at this event. Even though it will be my first year attending and covering it as a media correspondent, I know I'll learn a lot and have fun doing it. Stay tuned for a follow-up post where I'll share with you my personal experience at SDMT.

It's not too late to buy your tickets, head here. It's totally worth it and you'll get to support the local music scene.
